Průmyslové sítě bývají složeny ze zařízení komunikujících přes různé typy rozhraní a různými typy protokolů. Aby bylo možné tyto zařízení připojit do jedné sítě, jsou potřeba komunikační převodníky a kontroléry. Jedná se o volně programovatelné nebo konfigurovatelné převodníky neboli komunikační brány s nabídkou různých typů rozhraní jako jsou porty LAN, RS 232/422/485, CAN, PROFIBUS apod.
